RootsRing stores private family history for the members of each family tree. This page explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have.
What we store
- Your account: name, email address, a securely hashed password, and optional two-factor authentication details.
- Family tree content: people, relationships, dates, places, notes, life events, photos and documents that members add.
- Security records: sign-in attempts, IP addresses, browser information and actions taken, used to protect accounts and investigate misuse.
Who can see family data
Only members of a tree can see that tree. There are no public tree pages, and private pages are marked so search engines do not index them. Photos and documents are stored outside the public website and are only delivered after checking that you are allowed to see them. Tree owners can hide living people from members with the viewer role.
Adding information about other people
Family trees naturally include people who have not signed up. Please only add information you have a right to share, be especially careful with details about living people, and remove information if someone asks you to. Before inviting someone, make sure they are happy to receive an invitation.
Services we use
- Google reCAPTCHA v3 to protect forms from automated abuse (subject to Google’s privacy policy).
- IP reputation services that check whether a network address is known for abuse.
- An email provider to deliver invitations, password resets and security alerts.
Your rights
- Download a copy of your personal data from your account page.
- Tree owners can export their entire tree.
- Request deletion of your account or of specific data from your account page; the platform administrator reviews each request.
Deleted records are first soft-deleted so mistakes can be undone. Security and audit records may be kept where needed for safety and legal compliance.
